The beach, the river track, the mate's place two hours up the highway. Your dog wants to go everywhere with you. The car is the only part they don't enjoy.

Usually that comes down to what they're standing on. A hammock cover is a sheet of fabric hanging between two headrests. There's air underneath it. Every time the car leans, the surface moves, and your dog spends the trip working to stay upright.

Ours has a solid panel running the full width of the base. It doesn't dip, doesn't fold, doesn't shift when weight moves across it. The drive becomes part of the trip instead of the price of it.

Made for the trips you actually take

Short runs to the park, long hauls up the coast, and the wet sandy return leg nobody plans for. Four things make the difference on all of them.

• 01 Waterproof through and through. 600D Oxford with a sealed backing. Wet fur, muddy paws and the occasional accident stay on the surface. A damp cloth clears it.
• 02 Sides that hold them in. Raised wings on both edges stop your dog sliding off the bench and into the footwell when you take a corner properly.
• 03 A window to the front. Mesh panel in the forward section. They can see you, hear you and get the aircon. Anxious dogs travel far better when they aren't sealed in behind a wall of canvas.
• 04 Six attachment points. Four straps over the headrests, two anchors under the seat. It stays put on a three hour drive, which two strap covers do not.

The harness is included

A safety harness comes in the box, no extra cost. It clips into your existing seatbelt buckle so your dog is restrained rather than just kept in one area. Worth using every trip, even the short ones.

Sizing and materials

Run a tape across your back seat before you order. If it's narrower than 131 cm the cover won't sit flat.

Getting it in

Spread it across the bench with the mesh panel toward the front of the car. Front straps go over the front headrests, rear straps over the rear ones. Reach underneath and clip both anchors to the seat frame. Tighten each strap until the base is flat with no sag through the middle.

First fit takes a couple of minutes. After that it's under a minute, and most people just leave it in. It folds back against the seat when you need the space for people.
